Embracing a Sustainable Future: Massena Electric's Renewable Energy Commitment

As the demand for renewable energy continues to surge, governments, companies, and individuals are actively seeking ways to increase its adoption. In New York State, the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) set a target for 30% of electricity purchased to be from renewable sources by 2015. However, presently, less than 25% of the state's energy resources come from renewable sources, making the RPS an ambitious goal for most utilities.

At Massena Electric, we are proud to already exceed the RPS target by a significant margin. Approximately 75% of the power we provide to our customers comes from renewable sources, primarily hydroelectric power generated by the Niagara Power Project. This surpasses the amount of renewable energy purchased by investor-owned utilities in New York State by over three times.

While the RPS aims to push other utilities to increase their renewable energy procurement, such a requirement would be a step back for Massena Electric in terms of our environmental commitment. By adhering to the New York State average for greenhouse gas emissions, we would contribute:

• 13,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere, a leading greenhouse gas.
• 55 tons of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), a major component of acid rain.
• 26 tons of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), a significant contributor to smog and acid rain.
