Powering Massena

The Town of Massena Electric Department (MED) has been serving the community of Massena for over 40 years. As a municipal electric utility owned by the Town of Massena, the department is dedicated to providing reliable, affordable electricity to its customers. Located in St. Lawrence County in the northernmost part of New York State, Massena Electric Department serves over 9,000 customers across a coverage area of 131 square miles.

Massena Electric Department was established in 1981 following a mandatory voter referendum and has been providing top-quality service ever since. The department is governed by a five-person administrative board known as the Massena Electric Utility Board (MEUB). Members of the MEUB are appointed to five-year terms by the Town Board of the Town of Massena and oversee the appointment of a Superintendent to serve as the General Manager of the utility.

MED is one of 47 municipally owned power companies in New York State and provides energy at rates that are among the lowest 10 percent nationally, making it a top choice for both business and residential customers. MED's commitment to the environment is also noteworthy, with service reliability among the highest by leading indicators.

MED's mission is to provide its customers with the most reliable energy at the lowest possible cost with exceptional customer service. To achieve this goal, the department has a team of 20 full-time employees who are dedicated to providing the best possible service to their customers. MED is committed to continuing this long-standing commitment to its customers and has partnered with the New York Power Authority, SLIC, and other businesses located in the North Country to deliver top-quality service to the community.
